CIE KÄFIG – MOURAD MERZOUKI

The choreographer Mourad Merzouki, a figure of the hip-hop movement since the early 1990s, places his work at the crossroads of multiple disciplines. Around hip-hop dance, explored in all its styles, are grafted circus and martial arts, as well as the plastic arts, video and live music. Without losing sight of the movement’s roots, its social and geographical origins, this confrontation opens up new horizons for dance and provides new points of view.

Since 1996, 30 creations have been presented by his company Käfig in 700 cities and 65 countries, representing more than 3,000 performances before 1.7 million spectators. In 2009, he took over as director of the Centre chorégraphique national de Créteil et du Val-de-Marne, which he still directs. In 2013, he created the Kalypso festival, offering a new space of visibility to hip-hop dance companies in the Ile-de-France region, in parallel with the Karavel festival in the Lyon region. In 2016, he was appointed artistic advisor of Pôle en Scènes in Bron.
