Cimafunk is by far the most exciting new face in Cuba’s music scene.
Cimafunk is a cimarrón*, a free being defying classification, a pilgrim in search of new musical miscegenation and the reunion of black music. He believes in nothing but the power of the Groove and the cathartic communion of dancing bodies. A renaissance man, conscious of his roots and musical ancestry, Cimafunk’s music looks firmly into the future.
Singer, composer and producer, Cimafunk offers a subtle and bold mix of funk with Cuban music and African rhythms, a life-affirming sound, a UFO in the island’s music scene.
His debut album “Terapia” (Independent Production, 2017) and especially his electric live shows are inexorably conquering a multitude of audiences from Havana to Paris. He broke attendance records in iconic venues such as the Fabrica de Arte Cubano, El Sauce and La Tropical.
* Fugitive slaves who settled in the wild to lead a free life in Cuba.
During the spring of 2016, Erik left Los Boys to start his solo career under the moniker of Cimafunk. The name encapsulates Erik’s musical compass: In Cuba the term ‘cimarrón’ refers to the rebellious black slaves who resisted and escaped slavery. It is a term that captures his respect for black Cuban heritage but also his willingness to liberate himself from well-trodden musical paths.
His inspiration stemms from an eclectic pool of black music: from James Brown’s, George Clinton’s and Prince’s Funk and the soul music of Al Green and Bill Withers to Cuban “Trova” of Beny Moré and Bola de Nieve and Juan Formell’s y Los Van Van’s “songo”.
His first solo album “Terapia”, entirely composed and produced by Cimafunk is enriched by numerous collaboration with renowned Cuban musicians he has shared the stage with such as Roberto Carcassés (Piano), Ernesto Ermidas (Bass), Héctor Quintana (Guitar), Adel Gonzales (Percussions), Brenda Navarrete (Percussions and Voice), among others.
